1. Introduction
This part of the site is something of an oddity, as it moves completely away from the main “debunking” theme of this site. I plan to use it as a kind of “occasional blog”, in which to publish some of my more general writing. It’s a mixed bag of essays, presenting my views on a variety of subjects, but generally connected with space, astronomy and/or science in general.
Some of these essays are adapted from articles which were originally published in Transit, the magazine of Cleveland and Darlington Astronomical Society, which is also published on the Society’s web site ( and in one case, from one which wasn’t published ). Some of my friends have told me that they deserve a wider audience – hence I’m putting them here. In these cases, the dates in the headers indicate when I wrote the original articles, not when they were added to this site.
October 2025: I’ve also decided to write a few essays here on contemporary contentious issues, not connected with science, but very much connected with stupidity! There are a few topics which I’ve wanted to write about for the last few years, but haven’t dared, for fear that it might cost me my job, or prevent me getting another. But now that I’ve retired, there is no longer anything to stop me!
And if, in accordance with a current idiotic trend, I find the police coming to my door, because I’ve “upset” someone, then bring it on!
